The Technical Consultations on the Follow-Up of the UN Study on Violence against Children to be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, 26—30 May 2012, will be preceded by the 3rd SAIEVAC Children’s Consultation and followed up by the 3rd Governing Board Meeting on the 31st alongside the Planning Exercise Meeting on Corporal Punishment with the National Coordinators.
On 26-30 May, government representatives, children, civil society groups, experts and UN and other international agencies will meet to review progress towards implementing the recommendations of the UN Study on Violence against Children in South Asia. The aim of the Regional Consultation is to ensure the effective realisation of the recommendations by strengthening existing measures and processes. Key outcomes are expected to be a Regional road map to strengthen stakeholders’ commitment and responsibility to end violence against children, and a Commitment to Action Declaration.
An inter-governmental campaign against Corporal Punishment in South Asia will be launched at the Regional Consultation. Expected outcomes of the campaign include a prohibition in legislation of Corporal Punishment and other forms of cruel or degrading punishment of children in all settings; a recognition of Corporal Punishment as a harmful practice; and the promotion of positive parenting, caring and teaching methods.
The event is going to be organized by SAIEVAC Secretariat and hosted by The Government of Sri Lanka with the support of the South Asia Coordinating Group on Action Against Violence Against Children (SACG) and in collaboration with the office of the SRSG on VAC.
